The children of Mr Sylvanus Otieno, a teacher at Ojola Primary School in Gem Sub-County, had consumed cassava oblivious that the meal would be toxic.
This came as the latest deadly incident caused by this crop that is popular in the tropical countries including Kenya. So what causes death after consuming cassava roots?
Cassava roots are very rich in starch, and contain significant amounts of protein, minerals, vitamins A, B and C. However, they could cause death if eaten raw or prepared incorrectly.
The cassava plant contains hydrocyanic acid that is found just below the peel and in the roots.
